The Moose Jaw Humane Society (MJHS) wants families to show off their canine companions this weekend.

The Humane Society is set to host their inaugural Strut Your Mutt event on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the shelter. It will be a great opportunity to get some exercise, meet other dog lovers, and learn more about the MJHS.

“It is an opportunity for people who are proud of their dogs to show them off. They get to go for a little walk around Thatcher Drive,” said Dana Haukaas, executive director of the MJHS, adding that you can walk for as long as you wish. “It is also an opportunity to bring the community into the shelter.”

Participation requires a minimum $15 donation to the shelter. The cost includes a meal and a special “swag bag” for your dog. The meal will include a hotdog or hamburger, chips, and a pop. Extra food vouchers will be available for $5 each.

It promises to be a fun, family-friendly event.

“We will have a face painter here, a bouncy castle, emergency vehicles from the city’s emergency services, and there will be an ice cream cart.”

And don’t forget about the cats and dogs looking for their forever homes — you might just find a new companion.

“We are pretty full with cats at the moment; we’ve had an influx of kittens because that is the time of year that it is,” said Haukaas. “With our dogs, we’re not too bad.”

Registration closes today but Haukaas says, as long as people phone ahead, organizers will know how much food needs to be prepared.
