Ice shelters must be removed from Saskatchewan lakes and rivers by the end of March.

With spring on the way, the ice fishing season is coming to a close. As a result, the Government of Saskatchewan is reminding anglers that ice fishing shelters need to be removed later this month.

All fishing shelters south of Highway 16 must be removed by March 15. Meanwhile, shelters located north of Highway 16 need to be gone by March 31.

Every year, ice fishing shelters are abandoned on the ice. This can later prove dangerous and can also create environmental hazards when pieces wash ashore.

Anyone who fails to remove their ice shelters may be prosecuted. Additionally, the structure and its contents may be moved and confiscated.

Structures must have the owner’s full name, address and phone number on the outside in legible letters that are at least 2.5 cm high. The shelters have to be moved to a location where they can be loaded and transported to the owner’s residence or property.

Litter must be removed when shelters are taken off the ice.

Of course, you should always exercise caution when heading onto ice surfaces.

More information about fishing is available via the Saskatchewan Anglers’ Guide.
