Hogeboom in hunt for playoff spot at U18 girls provincial curling championship

Moose Jaw rink 2-2 through four draws with one round robin game remaining; Heisler foursome 1-1 in boys championship

Moose Jaw’s Kaylee Hogeboom is in contention for a playoff spot at the Curl Sask U18 Girls Open Provincial Championship.

Hogeboom and her rink of third Aryn Thibault, second Abby Hogeboom and lead Payton Fisher sit at 2-2 heading into their final game of the round robin in the 10-team tournament, currently underway at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

With the top two teams in her pool set to play one another in their final game, Hogeboom will need a win over Saskatoon Nutana’s Olivia Fisher during the 9 a.m. draw Friday and have a bit of help to finish either first or second and advance to the playoff round.

After losing her opening game Wednesday morning, Hogeboom put together back-to-back wins Wednesday evening and Thursday morning before dropping her second game Thursday afternoon.

Her first win came against Estevan’s Heidi Fradette, with Hogeboom scoring points over the final three ends to take a 7-5 victory. Trailing 5-2 through five ends, Hogeboom promptly put up three after the break to tie the game and then scored single points in the seventh and eighth to secure the win.

Things weren’t nearly as close against Regina Callie’s Mackenzie Bjornson, as back-to-back deuces gave Hogeboom a 4-1 lead through three ends before a four-spot in the fifth made it an 8-2 game. Another three in the seventh brought the contest to an end with Hogeboom taking an 11-3 win.

A big end proved to be the difference in Hogeboom’s second game Thursday, as trailing 4-3 to Regina Highland’s Addison Simpson through five ends, she’d give up a four-ender in in the sixth. Simpson then stole another in the seventh and the two teams shook hands.

Moose Jaw’s Dayne Heisler was unable to make it a two-win day on Wednesday, as after winning his opener, Heisler would fall 8-3 to Martensville’s Dylan Derksen.

Derksen scored three in the third end to go up 4-1 against Heisler, third Blake Montgomery, second Riley Cushway and lead Laine Burnham before putting up four in the seventh and bringing the game to an early end.

Heisler faces Avonlea’s Hudson Heistad (2-0) during the 7 p.m. draw Thursday before wrapping up the preliminary round against Langenburg’s Adin Clarke at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The top two teams from each pool advance to the Page Playoffs, with tiebreakers if necessary at 4:30 p.m. Friday, followed by the quarter-finals at 8:30 p.m.

The semifinals take place 10 a.m. Saturday followed by both championship finals at 2 p.m.
