High schools in Moose Jaw will soon hold open houses to help Grade 8 students better understand what they can expect once they move to the next grade.

High schools from both school divisions are hosting open houses on Monday, March 16 to help the class of 2024 and their families choose which school to attend next September. Central Collegiate, A.E. Peacock Collegiate, and Vanier Collegiate will hold their open houses from 5:30 to 9 p.m., while Riverview Collegiate has its open house from 5 to 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, Cornerstone Christian School will hold a shadow day on Friday, March 13 from 8:40 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. To register, contact admissions@ccsmj.ca. Parents can learn about Cornerstone and enjoy lunch that same day from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Tours available on request.

“It’s a drop-in basis. That would be true of any of the schools. You don’t have to drop in at 5:30 right away, you can show up at any time during those three-and-a-half hours,” explained Dustin Swanson, Peacock principal.

Students and families will have the opportunity to meet staff, tour the building, and learn more about the programs and classes high schools have to offer. Swanson thought an important part of the evening was for students to see the courses they can select when they start high school.

“In some ways, it’s a little bit of an opportunity to give a test drive as to what they will experience in high school,” Swanson said.

Students and families often have questions about what the transition is like to Grade 9 from Grade 8, so the open house is a good opportunity to ask staff and students what to expect and what the differences are between grades, he continued. This will hopefully make the move smoother for students.

“(I) encourage families to take the opportunity to explore the high schools. It’s not often you can go around and shop or compare (and) get an opportunity to connect with the different buildings,” Swanson added, “so we really encourage families to come out and look at all of the high schools and make a decisions about what school fits best for them and their needs.”
