High school basketball closes out regular season with busy slate of games

The Moose Jaw high school basketball league regular season is in the books, with the Central Cyclones taking first place in both the boys and girls league standings.

The Cyclones capped off their boys' campaign with a 96-66 win over the Peacock Toilers on Tuesday to finish with a perfect 8-0 record, while the girls picked up a 65-43 victory at Peacock to head into the post-season with a 7-1 mark.

Vanier also picked up a sweep in Lumsden Tuesday, with the Spirits defeating the Angels 70-61 and Vikings downing the Devils 80-46.

The Notre Dame Hounds travelled to Lumsden on Monday and saw the hosts take a 66-15 win in girls' play and fall 76-57 in boys' action.

The first round of the playoffs take place on Thursday night with the fourth-fifth place quarter-finals. Notre Dame is at Peacock in girls play, Lumsden at Notre Dame in boys. Game times are 6:20 p.m.

Central 96, Peacock 66

Things were close in the early going as Central only led by four after the first quarter, but the Cyclones steadily pulled away from there, leading 44-21 at the half and 79-45 through three quarters.

Mo Jabateh lead all scorers with 23 points, while Tommy Vincent had a 21-point showing and Mason Muchowski added 18.

Bryce Baumann scored 20 points for Peacock, who finished in second place with a 6-2 record, while Rafael Pondevida added 17.

Central 65, Peacock 43

Both teams took a balanced approach to their offence, and in the end it was the Cyclones who were able to put their depth to good use.

Only two players hit double digits in scoring for Central, with Malea Kletzel scoring 14 points and Lind-Z Detubio adding 10, while Peacock’s Ella Muchowski had a 12-point showing for the Toilers.

Central led 12-5 after the first quarter and 31-14 at the half.

Peacock finished fourth in the girls' standings with a 3-5 record.

Vanier 80, Lumsden 46

The Vikings capped off their regular season with a 4-4 record with their comfortable win in Lumsden, while the Devils went winless with an 0-8 mark.

Natan Shiferaw led Vanier with a 16-point showing, Max Pollack had 13 points for the host team.

Other scoring information was unavailable.

Vanier 70, Lumsden 61

Vanier moved into a second-place tie at 5-3 after emerging with a narrow victory in one of the closest games of the season.

The Spirits led after both the first and second quarters but were never able to pull away, holding a 15-13 edge after the opening 10 minutes and 29-27 lead at halftime. Vanier managed to ‘pull away’ and lead by four 50-46 through three before going on to their nine-point win.

Heidi Bews did all she could to help keep the Angels in touch, scoring 31 points to lead all scorers. Raena Agarand added 12 points for Lumsden.

Kate Waldenberger and Feona Tolentino had 15 points each for Vanier, Waverly Demassi added 11.

Notre Dame 76, Lumsden 57

Lumsden took a 13-8 lead out of the first quarter, but saw Notre Dame take the lead 25-23 before halftime. The Hounds continued their offensive success after the break with a 25-point third quarter and would go on to their comfortable win.

John Lopez scored 24 points for the Hounds, Gabe Bugeaud added 16.

Max Pollack had 26 points for Lumsden, Ben Pollack scored 13.

Lumsden 66, Notre Dame 15

With the Hounds’ Sask Female AAA Hockey League team coming off four games in five nights and playing a playoff game 24 hours later, Notre Dame was extremely shorthanded in their season finale.

Lumsden held the Hounds to five first-quarter points and only two in the fourth to take their commanding win. Top scorers were unavailable
