High school badminton players move a step closer to provincials with District wins

Regional championships set for this weekend in Regina, with top players competing in provincials in Unity on May 13

Schools from Moose Jaw and area will be well represented at the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association senior badminton regional championships this coming weekend in Regina.

The Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars picked up a pair of titles at the District playdown in Peacock on Saturday, while Cornerstone, Central and Vanier all had athletes finish in the top two, earning the right to represent South Central at regionals.

Cornerstone’s Kiana Hrechka followed up her city championship with the same amount of success, claiming gold in the girls singles division. Vanier’s Feona Tolentino took the second provincial spot, while Avonlea’s Callie Callaghan was the bronze medalist.

The boys singles division was won by Briecrest’s Ike Wong, with city champion Nigel Fang from Central taking second spot and city runner up Allen Lu of Peacock winning bronze.

The Cougars also took top spot in boys doubles, with Cayden Tsoi and Boscoe Yu getting past Lafleche’s Easton Lee and Jake Starke for gold. Mossbank’s Ryder Peterson and Sahl Jolly claimed bronze.

Winning the girls doubles title are Miyah Tucker-Bellaire and Sophie Simonson of Gravelbourg, while Glentworth’s Savannah Peterson and Crystal McLean landed the second regional berth. Fanny Beinecke and Eszter Szalacsi-Toth won the bronze medals.

Rouleau’s Chase and Cara Faris won mixed doubles, taking top spot ahead of Assiniboia’s Devin Karst and Faith Kwasnicki. Kincaid’s Ava Sayers and Matthew Thibault finished third.
