Are you one of the many people who recently decided to purchase a gym membership? The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority of Saskatchewan (FCAA) wants consumers to know their rights.
Take the following steps before signing a gym membership contract:
- Read the entire contract and ensure you understand the terms and conditions;
- Ascertain the total cost of the membership, including any fees for classes or trainers;
- Ask questions to clarify anything you do not understand before signing.
By law, your gym contract must not exceed two years in length.
Need to cancel? You have the right to do so within seven business days of receiving a written copy. You might also be albe to cancel if:
- you move more than 30 km away;
- your doctor says that gym participation is not possible for medical reasons;
- there are changes in the services provided, or the facility has moved more than 10 km from its former location.
Be sure to understand the cancellation process and what penalties or fees may be imposed.
