A celebration of 60th birthdays for a group of friends has intensified into what promises to be an epic summer party on Saturday, July 30 at Palliser Regional Park on the shores of Lake Diefenbaker.

Eby and several friends had already planned a private party to take place on the August long weekend. There were a group of 60th birthdays to celebrate and a party seemed appropriate. The organizers then realized that 2022 also happened to be the 60th birthday of the park itself.

“Aaron Ruston of the band the UnCoolas contacted me about 3 months ago and said the band wanted to play in our park (Palliser Regional Park) this summer, and could we make something happen. And I said, ‘absolutely!’” said Heather Eby, the event organizer.

“The UnCoolas had played at Palliser Park a number of years ago and really enjoyed it,” explained Ruston. “I was talking to Heather Eby one time and I asked her if they were having any events because I’d love to bring the UnCoolas and just kind of rock it out for the evening.”

By coincidence, Ruston also turned 60 this year. When he found out the purpose of the occasion, the plan was cemented.

The park recently added a large deck onto the camp kitchen, making a perfect stage for the UnCoolas to play under the summer evening sky.

The band is a group of veteran professional musicians who have toured across North American in various configurations. Two of them were also founding members of Men Without Shame and the Blazers out of Regina.

“The band itself has been around probably for 16 or 17 years,” Ruston said. “I’ve been with the band for about 13 of that. We do everything from classic rock to more modern stuff, and then country, of course. We’ve played lots of different places, that’s for sure, so yeah, come on out, it’s gonna be fun!”

Moose Jaw’s Johnny Beam will also be on site with his Taco Time food truck for the evening. The menu will include 1-lb Dorito burritos, tacos in a bag, taco dogs, dilly dogs, and regular dogs.

The band will start at around 8:30. A cash bar will be available onsite.

Advanced tickets have sold out, but tickets will still be available at the door for $20 per person.
