The Shell Lake product carded a one-under par 70 at the Hillcrest Golf Club on Wednesday to hold a 10-shot lead over Yorkton’s Ella Kozak with a 141 total.
“I started off pretty strong, I knew I wanted to at least get a par instead of a bogey because that’s what I’ve been doing the last few rounds, but once I got off to the good start I just wanted to keep it going,” Fry said.
Fry birdied the second hole and shot a two-under 33 on the front nine. She went into cruise control on the back, recording a single bogey to cap her round in impressive fashion. Combined with her even-par 71 on Tuesday, Fry is now one-under for the tournament.
Kozak shot a four-over 75 to move into a tie for second with Saskatoon’s Sarah Grieve, who carded a second-round 76.
Asked if there was any part of her round that helped give her momentum on Wednesday, Fry’s answer was simple.
“Pretty much every single hole, there were a couple of putts I want to redo, but yeah, it was all pretty solid,” she said.
It would be easy to think it will be nothing but a fun day on the links in the final round -- Fry tees off at 11:30 a.m. with Grieve and Kozak -- but golf is golf and things can go awry quick. Especially when you’re chasing a bit of history. Already a two-time junior champ, she’ll join a famous name if she clears the field Thursday.
“It’s nice to have the lead, but don’t want to get too confident because you never know. I just have to keep on as well as I can,” Fry said. “Now I just want to finish off strong and win it three times like Brooke Hobson did.”
Changes at the Top in Men’s Tournament
Meanwhile, in the Junior Men’s draw, it’s become apparent it’ll take a pretty special round to land top spot.
Case in point, what Saskatoon Riverside’s Tommy Danielson put together on Wednesday.
Danielson had only two bogeys in his round, and after one of those came on the 10th hole, reeled off birdies on three of the next five to card a two-under 70.
That gave him a 140 total through two rounds, good enough to jump five places into first place, two shots ahead of first-round leader Will Blake of Regina.
And Danielson is going to have an army chasing him in the final round.
Blake is part of a group of four tied for second at 142, including Saskatoon Willows’ Max Regier, who shot a one-under 70 for the only other round under par on Wednesday. Radville’s Davin Bourassa (70-72) and Luke Cote (71-71) are also at 141.
Danielson will tee off with Blake and Regier in the final group of the tournament at 12:20 p.m. on Thursday.
