If you were one of the thousands of patrons who took in the Highway to Heroes Car Show at the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds this past July, you played a part in helping a host of local organizations and charities.
That’s because of the close to $15,000 profit the Friends of the Forces Fellowship was able to gather from the event, more than half went to special donations during their annual volunteer appreciation banquet on Wednesday night at the 15 Wing Social Centre.
Six cheques ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 were presented to local organizations, continuing the ongoing support the Fellowship has for charities since the Highway to Heroes show began.
“From our funds, we have a mandate to support military family projects, or projects that support veterans and that type of thing,” said Joyce Walter with the Friends of the Forces Fellowship. “From the last car show, we finally had a nice pool of funds from which we could make some selections, and we decided we had some really good projects that we would like to support.”
As an example of their dedication to supporting military groups, donations totalling $5,000 were made to the army, navy and sea cadet organizations in the community, all of which spent many an hour helping out with the show this summer.
The event also featured special presentations to a long list of sponsors, one of the main features of the evening.
“After our car show we always have an appreciation event for our sponsors and volunteers, just as a way of saying thank you because without them we wouldn’t be able to have a car show,” Walter said. “We have presentations for each one, something to say thank you and maybe come back and help us out next year.”
The 2023 Highway to Heroes Show had slightly fewer vehicles take part compared to the return from COVID the previous summer, but the number of folks who took advantage of a beautiful mid-summer day was substantially higher.
The hope is for an even bigger and better show in 2024, with plenty of decisions in that direction to be made in the coming months.
“There are so many car shows, so we have to try and come up with something to make our show a highlight and we’re working on some things,” Walter said.
