The Moose Jaw Carpet One Mavericks won’t have to worry about long road trips when they take the ice in their Hockey Sask U13 A provincial championship series.

That’s because the team they’re playing in the final is… the Moose Jaw Carpet One Mavericks.

The two Sask Female Hockey League teams will do battle for provincial gold beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Bert Hunt Arena, marking the first time in recent history that two Moose Jaw Minor Hockey teams will play for a Sask Hockey title.

The Mavericks 2 had a slightly longer road to the final, as they faced Weyburn in the quarter-final and rolled to 11-1 and 10-8 victories in the best-of-three series. Round two was much of the same, with Moose Jaw defeating Swift Current 5-1 and 8-1 to book their spot in the gold medal series.

The Mavericks 1 were a little busier in their semifinal, battling to three one-goal wins over Warman. Moose Jaw took a 1-0 victory in the opener, fell 4-3 in Game 2 and finished things off with a 2-1 victory in the third and deciding contest.

That the two local crews are going for gold shouldn’t be a surprise given their regular season success -- the Mavericks 1 put together an 18-2-0-0 to finish in first place in the Sask Female Hockey League East Division, while the Mavericks 2 were 19-1-0-0 and tops in the West Division.

Game 2 of the series is set for Sunday, Mar. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Bert Hunt.

The Mavericks 2 have additional business to attend to in the SFHL final, where they’ll face the Parkland Fire.

Moose Jaw won 4-3 in overtime in Game 3 to book their spot in the league title series, while Parkland took a 6-2 win over the Mavericks 1 in the third-and-deciding game of their semifinal.

That series begins Monday, Mar. 27 in Melville, with Game 2 on Wednesday, Mar. 29 at 7:45 p.m. at the Bert Hunt.

The Moose Jaw Warriors are in the midst of a pair of provincial finals, with both the U15 AA Tier II and U13 AA Tier II championships underway.

The U15 Warriors received a bye to the final and lost their opener 6-1 to Saskatoon. Game 2 takes place on Saturday, Mar. 24 at 6:15 p.m. at the Bert Hunt.

The U13 Warriors White took an 8-1 victory and tied 3-3 against Regina to book their provincial final berth. Game 1 of that series saw Saskatoon take an 8-7 win, with Game 2 on Saturday, Mar. 24 at 6:15 p.m. at the Bert Hunt.
