Five for Friday: Terrible Easter candy

This Sunday is Easter. And, while we won’t be able to celebrate as we are accustomed to, there are ways we can still spend time with family or take in church services. Of course, Easter, like many holidays, has become synonymous with candy and other tasty treats. Not every offering is a winner though.

This week, we highlight five terrible Easter candies.

Jellybeans

It is not that jellybeans are necessarily terrible. In fact, jellybeans can be a great addition to any Easter basket. There is, however, a big difference between good, name brand jellybeans, and the cheap, generic stuff. Cheap jellybeans don’t taste as good and they often have a less-than-desirable texture. There are better things to munch on anyway.

Peeps

Peeps are pretty much synonymous with Easter — but that’s maybe not a good thing. Certainly, there are some people out there who enjoy Peeps. I am not one of those people (Peeple?). These things come in garish colours and are just…not good. Marshmallows are good but Peeps somehow manage to sully the good name of marshmallows. They are sticky and the texture is icky. There is nothing good to say about Peeps except that they are only available once a year.
I’m not positive, but I think they might be able to survive a nuclear blast.

Easter Corn

Candy corn might just be the most universally hated candy in existence. About the only other “treat” that people might hate more is that weird gum that tastes like soap for some reason. Despite the general public’s misgivings over candy corn, there is indeed an Easter version. The candy — which comes in festive, themed colours — is basically the same product you know and hate that comes out every Halloween. If you are among those who hate candy corn, giving it a dye job won’t sway your mind.

Chocolate Bunnies

Those solid, chocolate bunnies are an Easter tradition. But, like jellybeans, you get what you pay for. There are lots of cheap chocolate bunnies around, all of which are made with low quality chocolate. They are not satisfying. If you are going to get a chocolate bunny, splurge on something made by a chocolate company you have heard of.

Chocolate Eggs

These are the individually wrapped eggs that are often hidden during Easter egg hunts. There is nothing inherently wrong with them, except they too suffer from cheap chocolate. Also, for some strange reason, it is impossible to buy a package of these and not end up with a few that are all stale and dried out. Plus, the wrappers come off too easily, exposing your chocolate to the elements, not to mention other people’s hands.
Oh, and despite your best efforts, it is pretty much a guarantee that you will forget where you hid all the eggs, which means that in six months you will find one half-melted and dried out.

I would rather have a package of Mini Eggs.

Whether you snack on Easter candy or not, be sure to have a great holiday. Remember to stay safe and enjoy the weekend!
