Engineering department handled 36 water main breaks in first quarter of 2019

The prolonged cold winter led to frost penetrating deep into the ground, which then cracked pipes during the winter and when the frost slowly seeped out of the ground.

The City of Moose Jaw’s engineering department responded to 36 water main breaks in the first quarter of this year, compared to 27 such breaks during the first quarter of 2018.

The reason the department responded to so many water main breaks from January to March is because the prolonged winter cold led to frost penetrating deep into the ground, explained a departmental report. The depth of the frost contributed to the increased pipe failures.

The engineering department — along with every other department at city hall — provided a report on its activities in the first quarter of 2019 for city council’s May 13 regular meeting.

The diversion of recyclable materials from the landfill in the first quarter of this year increased to 21.2 per cent, compared to 20.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2018, the report said. Residential waste tonnage decreased by 8.9 per cent during the same comparison period.

Year over year, the total landfill tonnage received increased by 127 tonnes, or 2.1 per cent.
