DQ Miracle Treat Day a sweet fundraiser

On August 11th, and for the last 20th years, donations have been raised on Miracle Treat Day for 170 children’s hospitals.

Unfortunately, Dairy Queen’s Miracle Treat Day in Moose Jaw wasn’t exactly the kind of day you would like to get out to enjoy an ice-cream blizzard under the hot Saskatchewan sun.  The weather was rather cool, overcast and rainy, but nevertheless, the support came out for a great cause – our provincial Jim Pattison’s Children’s Hospital.

On August 11th, and for the last 20th years, donations have been raised on Miracle Treat Day for 170 children’s hospitals; for every Blizzard purchased, participating locations have donated net proceeds to their local children’s hospital.  Both Moose Jaw Dairy Queens participated and were kept remarkably busy with fourteen pre-orders, a constant flow of drive-thru orders, and many more customers coming to get their tasty treat.

"The support from the community has been great. Our drive-thru has only had a quick 5-minute break before another line-up, and they are buying like 5 or 6 Blizzards at a time,” says Ann Angeles, the Manager of the 1711 Main St. North Dairy Queen.

This year’s most popular Blizzards were the Caramel Drumstick and the Coffee Crisp. Of course, Oreo and Cookie Dough were top sellers, as well, but a Blizzard that surprised the staff with how popular it was this year was the Strawberry Cheesecake.

Something new that manager Angeles tried this year was calling out to local businesses to let them know about Miracle Treat Day. This allowed her to get the word out on a more personal level, rather than just printing out flyers.

"Dairy Queen on Main and the one on Caribou are very thankful for the local businesses that have graciously supported us every year that we have been doing Miracle Treat Day," she said.

Last year Saskatchewan Dairy Queens raised a total of $155,455.88. The total for all Canadian Dairy Queens is close to $2 million.

Dairy Queen has aided the Children’s Miracle Network in Canada since 1984. Together they have contributed over $46 million to local children’s hospital foundations in Canada.
