Dozens of judoists descend on Moose Jaw for championships

Over the weekend of April 13 and 14, 135 judo athletes competed at Vanier Collegiate

Dozen of judoists from across the province made Vanier Collegiate’s gym their home for the weekend of April 13-14, 2024 to attend the Judo Provincial Championship tournament.

About 135 athletes attended the event competing in 240 divisions as some athletes compete in the knee start (groundwork) as well as the standing start.

Hosting the provincial championships is like having the cherry on top of pastry for the club.

“It’s very important (to have the championships here). We’ve been one of the biggest clubs in the province probably in the last 20 years. But for us to have volunteer base and the facilities like this to be able to host this kind of event it’s a pretty easy choice for Judo Sask,” said Jim Wiens, the Koseikan Judo Club coach.

Hosting the championships allows the Koseikan Judo Club - and other local judo clubs - to showcase Judo.

“It is really a good opportunity to show off the sport. What is involved in the sport. We’ve been part of this city since the 1940’s.”

Things, such as free admission to the competition is designed to allow those considering taking up judo to come out and see what the sport entails.

“Anybody in the town or surrounding area that is interested in coming to see what the sport is about (they’re welcome). The bleachers are full. There are lots and lots of people coming here to see what it is like to try to do this sport,” Wiens said. “Hopefully we get some more people to this club and some of the other clubs in the surrounding area.”

Wiens said the number of people who are involved in judo is encouraging as a sport has returned to the numbers before the COVID-19 epidemic.

“We’ve even surpassed some of the levels it was before,” he said.

With so many athletes coming from out of town the event created a minor tourist boom as many people stayed in hotels for the entire weekend. There would be people going out to eat and then relaxing in their rooms, he said.

“It is (a mini economic boom) a way for us to show off the sport.”
