Amateur historians and anyone with an interest in the past will want to check out the resources available in local and provincial archives this week.

The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan is commemorating Archives Week 2021, as of Feb. 7.  There will certainly be lots to discover.

The public can take a virtual tour of the Archives’ Permanent Collection through a video exploration of research spaces and storage areas, available on the organization’s YouTube channel. There you will also find one-of-a-kind historic films, as well as interviews from a Heritage Saskatchewan Living Heritage video project entitled ‘COVID-19 Culture.’

The Provincial Archives will also be launching an in-person and virtual display on ‘Winter Sports in Saskatchewan’ this week. The in-person display is located at the Archives Gallery at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan (2440 Broad Street, Regina). The virtual exhibit can be viewed online.

“We are excited to showcase the Permanent Collection and to share how archivists collect and preserve Saskatchewan’s documentary heritage,” Provincial Archivist Linda McIntyre said.  “These events are great ways to experience the history of our province.”

Meanwhile, the Moose Jaw Public Library is also showing off its collection this week with a special event on Thursday, Feb. 11. “An Archives History Mystery” will be held online via Zoom, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Guests will have an opportunity to identify people and places in photos provided. It will also be an opportunity to swap stories and share memories.

You can access the Provincial Archives by making an appointment, either by phone or online. Services are offered in French upon request. For more, visit www.saskarchives.com.
