A new year means new committees for members of city council, who will serve on these groups for a few months, one year, or — in some cases — up to two years.

During the Dec. 12 regular meeting, council voted to appoint the mayor and councillors to various committees and advisory boards for a term of office starting Jan. 1, 2023.

Each year, the council must make these appointments to boards, committees and commissions associated with the City of Moose Jaw. The city clerk’s office sends letters to council members about their terms on those groups and any council vacancies that existed as of Dec. 31, 2022.

Council approved the following appointments during the meeting:

  • Coun. Kim Robinson has been appointed to the community clean-up committee, the parks, recreation and facilities advisory committee, the Board of Police Commissioners, the Community-based Coalition of Moose Jaw, Tourism Moose Jaw, and the investment committee
  • Coun. Crystal Froese has been appointed to the cultural diversity advisory committee, the heritage advisory committee, the Cultural Centre, the South Central Transportation Committee and Wakamow Valley Authority
  • Coun. Heather Eby has been appointed to the public art committee, the public library board, the Palliser Regional Library board, and the Downtown Moose Jaw Association
  • Coun. Jamey Logan has been appointed to the public works, infrastructure and environment advisory committee, the special needs advisory committee, and the Humane Society
  • Coun. Dawn Luhning has been appointed to the investment committee
  • Coun. Doug Blanc has been appointed to the Board of Police Commissioners, the exhibition board, and the museum and art gallery
  • Mayor Clive Tolley has been appointed to the youth advisory committee, the investment committee, the public library board, the Board of Police Commissioners and the Moose Jaw Municipal Airport Authority

The mayor is automatically appointed to the public library board, the Board of Police Commissioners and the airport authority based on sections in the acts that govern those bodies.

Terms for most committees begin Jan. 1, 2023 and end Dec. 31, 2023.

However, the mayor’s appointment to the youth advisory committee ends on June 30, while his term on the investment committee ends on Nov. 30, 2024. Meanwhile, Luhning’s and Robinson’s terms on the investment committee also end on Nov. 30, 2024.

Appointment to chairperson positions

Also during the meeting, for the term Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, Froese was appointed the deputy mayor, Eby was appointed chairwoman of executive committee and Luhning was appointed chairwoman of the personnel committee, or until a successor is appointed.

The next regular council meeting is Monday, Jan. 9, 2023.
