City council has appointed Cristin Korchinski as a building official for the City of Moose Jaw, which means she can review all buildings and structures categorized as class 1.
Council voted unanimously during its Dec. 12 regular meeting to appoint Korchinski as a building official under section 16 of The Construction Code Act. Council also voted to have the mayor and city clerk sign the appointment certificate.
“We’re extremely proud of (Korchinski) taking this training,” city manager Jim Puffalt said.
“She worked really hard to get her class 1 licence,” agreed Michelle Sanson, director of planning and development.
Korchinski, one of the municipality’s bylaw officers, studied and passed her class 1 building official exams to attain her class 1 restrictive licence, a council report explained.
Municode — which supports local governments — will mentor her for a while because she is new to the position. She will soon assume all duties related to plan reviews and inspections for class 1 structures such as dwellings, garages and decks. This will save the city money on external contracting for these projects, the document continued.
Meanwhile, Municode has been completing all work with building inspections and plan reviews because the city’s previous two class 3 building officials resigned or moved to different positions, the report added. City hall is still actively recruiting for a class 3 building official.
The next regular council meeting is Monday, Jan. 9.
