Coteau Street West jumps two spots to No. 5 in CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign

Last week Coteau Street West was in seventh position, but clearly, residents want to see this pothole-filled street receive the proper attention it deserves and hope to see it land in a higher position — or take the dubious spot at No. 1.

It’s week 3 of CAA Saskatchewan’s 2023 Worst Roads Campaign and Moose Jaw’s Coteau Street West has vaulted two spots to land in No. 5.

Last week Coteau Street West was in seventh position, but clearly, residents want to see this pothole-filled street receive the proper attention it deserves and hope to see it land in a higher position — or take the dubious spot at No. 1.

This week in CAA’s Worst Roads Roving Reporter series, roving reporter Angel Blair interviews Sarah Bilawski, who cycles over 10,000 kilometres annually.

Bilawski knows all too well about the dangers of cycling on unsafe roads, saying, “There’s a lot for cars to pay attention to ... even though I ride following the rules, if a car has to swerve to not hit a pothole, you can get hit.”

CAA’s Worst Roads campaign, which started on April 4, invites all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians, bus riders, motorists, and motorcyclists, to nominate and vote for the worst, most unsafe road on which they have recently travelled.

On Thursday, April 20, the CAA Worst Roads spotlight is on Saskatoon’s Circle Drive and Moose Jaw’s Fourth Avenue Viaduct.

The City of Saskatoon’s Todd Grabowski talks about the improvements being made on Circle Drive, which was No. 6 in the CAA 2022 Top Ten Worst Roads. Meanwhile, Moose Jaw Mayor Clive Tolley shares his insights on the city’s Fourth Avenue Viaduct, which placed seventh last year.

As of April 18, the top 10 roads in the campaign included Highway 44 near Eston, Highway 13 near Redvers, Highway 30 near Eston, Butte Street in Pilot Butte, Coteau Street West, Highway 9 near Whitewood, Highway 5 near Buchanan, Highway 123 near Petaigan/Ravendale/Pemmican Portage, Highway 9 near Hudson Bay and Old Highway 35 near White Fox.

Visit caaworstroads.com/clubs/saskatchewan to vote for your favourite worst road. The competition closes Tuesday, April 25.
