The City of Moose Jaw plans to hold an open house in late February so residents in the city and outside the community can learn more about the new landfill.

The open house will occur on Thursday, Feb. 22, on the mezzanine level at the Events Centre, with sessions occurring from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

“To continue to serve the city and surrounding rural municipalities, planning is underway to develop a new (solid waste management venue) to replace the city’s current sanitary landfill,” a news release said. “The proposed location is approximately two kilometres directly north of Moose Jaw on two quarter-sections of land in the R.M. of Moose Jaw No. 161.”

The come-and-go open house sessions offer people a chance to view the key components of the proposed venue and acquire answers to questions from the City of Moose Jaw, the Ministry of Environment, and consultants from GHD and Associated Engineering.

Residents will also be able to provide feedback before the R.M. of Moose Jaw considers the city’s discretionary use application for the proposed site.

Components of the new solid waste management venue will include:

  • Public drop-off area for household waste and recycling
  • Landfill
  • Wood waste management
  • Composting
  • Environmental compliance features such as leachate, stormwater and landfill gas management

City hall has sent open house invitation letters to properties in the rural municipality in the vicinity of the proposed site. For full details on the proposed venue, including answers to Frequently Asked Questions, visit www.moosejaw.ca/swmp.
