Cassidy’s Lemonade Stand a hopping stop despite the weather

Students and supporters line up outside Palliser Heights despite steady rain
As school buses and lines of cars picked up students in the driving rain outside of Palliser Heights School on Friday afternoon, Cassidy Evans found herself surprisingly busy.

Well, ‘surprising’ in the sense that one would think with a steady downpour underway, folks wouldn’t be lining up for chips and candy and, yes, the occasional glass of lemonade.

But Cassidy’s Lemonade Stand isn’t your average food truck stop-and-go kind of place. No, all the proceeds out of the now-famous former ice cream truck go to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.

That’s something that attracts plenty of attention – and the business that goes with it.

“It’s been really good,” said Evans, 11, as youngsters and parents alike lined up to sample the wares on hand. “We’ve had kids from other schools coming by too, even though it’s raining.”

To illustrate the point, mom Kim was on hand wiping down the counter surface in a futile attempt to try and keep things somewhat dry under the Stand’s canopy. And the rain did have an extra drawback in the end – the Evans family decided that what was going to be a two-day event at Palliser Heights would be shortened to just Friday with even more inclement weather on tap for Saturday.

Disappointing, sure. But with the kind of money Cassidy has raised in the last seven years since being diagnosed with the disease, she has one heck of a consolation prize.

“It’s has grown a lot from a stand to a truck and we’ve raised over $100,000 for cystic fibrosis in seven years,” she said. “I’m happy with how it’s taken off and I hope it gets even better.”

Anyone up for a road trip can have another chance to check out the $2 glasses of delicious lemon goodness, as Cassidy’s Lemonade Stand will be set up in Saskatoon on June 25 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., along with other dates in the near future.
