Canada falls to Sweden in World Under-18 hockey championship semifinal

Back-and-forth contest sees host team score game winner with 3:31 left in third
It was heartbreak for Moose Jaw Warriors Brayden Tracey, Daemon Hunt and Team Canada at the World Under-18 hockey championship in Ornskolsvik, Sweden on Saturday afternoon.

Albin Grewe scored with 3:31 remaining in the third period as Sweden took a 4-3 win over Canada in the championship semifinal, knocking Canada to the bronze medal game against the U.S. on Sunday.

Things were as close as could be throughout the contest – Sweden’s Philip Broberg and Connor Zary exchanged goals in the first period to send the two teams into the break tied 1-1. Alex Newhook gave Canada a 2-1 led 1:27 into the second, but Alexander Holtz’s goal with 6:05 remaining in the frame sent the two teams into the third once again tied.

Holtz scored his second of the game midway through the third to put Sweden ahead, but Zary would add his second of the contest with 7:11 to play to knot things up for the third time in the game.

That set the stage for Grewe, who sent the hometown crowd home happy with his game-winning marker.

Neither Tracey or Hunt hit the scoresheet, with Tracey finishing the game minus-two and Hunt even in plus-minus.

Sweden will face Russia for gold after Russia defeated the U.S. 3-2 in a shootout in the other semifinal.
