Start of construction on the new school on South Hill boosted the value of August building permits to more than $44 million.

The long planned elementary school will replace Westmount School and Empire School

Building permit values for 112 permits issued by city hall to the end of August amounted to $50.2 million, about two-thirds of last year’s $83.7 million.

Major commercial permits were $1.5 million for a new clinic on Highland Road near the hospital; $1.3 million for alterations at 36 Athabasca Street West by MNP in the former social services building; $1.15 million for a transportation terminal at the Viterra grain elevator; $350,000 for renovations to Tim Horton’s on Main Street; and $200,000 for alteration to a fitness centre at 1175 Athabasca Street East.

No permits were issued for new houses in August, the same as last August.

To August 31, four new houses worth $1.13 million were started compared with 20 worth $7.9 million last year.

Two demolition permits were issued.
