Art Guild opening reception of 'Sunflower Power' at MJM&AG

“We really appreciate being able to support local artists and presenting their work and aiding to professional development.”

Moose Jaw Art Guild held its opening reception for its annual exhibition at the Moose Jaw Museum and Art gallery (MJM&AG) on Nov. 19. This year’s theme was “Sunflower Power.”

The exhibition started with an opening speech from director Jennifer McRorie and president of the Art Guild, Beth Crabb, was invited as an honourable guest speaker for her valuable thoughts and comments about the art exhibition and the people of Ukraine. The exhibition space was painted yellow to blend with the theme of sunflowers.

Director and curator of the MJM&AG, Jennifer McRorie said they have a long-standing relationship with the Art Guild of Moose Jaw. “We really appreciate being able to support local artists and presenting their work and aiding to professional development.”

“I just really want to express that we are so appreciative of the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery for allowing us to show with them and providing this beautiful reception for all the hard work in making this exhibition happen,” said Cathy Sinclair, Secretary of the Moose Jaw Art Guild.

“Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery have been involved with people from Ukraine for a very long time,” education co-ordinator of MJM&AG, Christy Schweiger, said. She has been working, supporting and aiding Ukrainian individuals and families for quite some time. She uses social media platforms to communicate with Moose Jaw people to lend a helping hand to this cause.

Sinclair interpreted one of the artworks from an artistic aesthetic by describing that sunflowers bring life and hope. She said the sunflower seed, like the flower, will eventually die, but the seeds contain life. “I think we have seen such life, power, and strength in the sunflower seeds that can withstand drought and weather calamities and still produce sunflowers of the future.”
