SGI is asking drivers to watch their speeds during the next traffic spotlight, as a number of speed-related offences in the last few months have raised concerns about reckless driving.
Fines begin at $190 for 20km/h over the speed limit on a regular road, increasing by every kilometer over the limit. School zones or construction zones carry a heavier penalty, and the worst cases could face Criminal Code charges or vehicle impoundment.
A driver caught last week doing 101km/h on a road near Regina with a limit of 50km/h was slapped with an $809 fine and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. It is just one of the many cases SGI cites as a cautionary tale.
Speeding and reckless driving is an issue that law enforcement is going to be focusing on in April, as an estimated 21 deaths and over 600 injuries every year are caused by speed-related collisions.
