Get ready for a mobile phone alert this afternoon.
Today at 1:55 p.m. the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will test Alert Ready, the national emergency alerting system.
The test will appear on television, radio, and compatible wireless devices, as well as through the SaskAlert app.
To receive the alert, you must have a compatible device with the latest software update. You must also be connected to the LTE network. For a list of compatible devices, visit SaskTel's website. More information on the alert system can be found on the Alert Ready website.
It is appropriate timing, as May 5-11 is Emergency Preparedness Week in the province.
Be sure you and your family are ready for an emergency. This includes your pets. Prepare an emergency plan. There are number of great tips available online from the Saskatchewan Society for the Prevent of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the provincial government.
You also need to have an emergency kit ready. The kit should contain important items like water (at least two litres per person, per day), food that won’t spoil, a first aid kit, cash in smaller bills, and more.
“It’s important that if an emergency situation arrives there is a plan in place so you and your family can be self-sufficient for 72 hours,” said Moose Jaw Fire Department deputy fire chief Mike Russell in a press release. He is also the local Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) coordinator.
“That means having a plan that covers everything from evacuation, food and water, a first aid kit, where to meet your family and even what to do with your pets.”
