Alcohol, cannabis banned for long weekend campers

Provincial parks are banning alcohol and cannabis over the long weekend, to avoid disturbances for spring campers

The Victoria Day long weekend is opening weekend for provincial parks across the province, and the Government of Saskatchewan is reminding campers of the alcohol ban in effect for all campsites and picnic areas within provincial parks.

The ban lasts from May 16-20, and will also include cannabis in addition to alcohol this year. It will not affect cottages or rental cabins, and businesses with a liquor license are free to continue serving. Some regional parks will also be observing the ban.

Concern over intoxication in parks leading to disturbances and vandalism is what prompted the Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sports to implement the ban, in order to keep the weekend enjoyable for all campers in the park.

Any reports of violations on the long weekend can be called in to Parks Watch, toll-free, at 1-800-667-1788.

May 16 is also the beginning of the spring discount: campsites are available for reservation with $5 per night off until June 24.

Spring is a quieter time, and there are still many sites available for booking through the Sask Parks website

Buffalo Pound Provincial Park is one site of many that has the Camp-Easy program for low-maintenance camping, and is not currently under any fire bans.
