Agrimart: Initial crop yields better than last year across the province

All major crops, except oats, are yielding better than last year, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

Initial harvest production shows yields are well above last year's averages in Saskatchewan.

All major crops, except oats, are yielding better than last year, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

In some instances yields are twice last year's initial harvest. Canola, running at 34 bushels an acre, is well above the 20 bushels of 2021.

At 30 bushels average durum is almost twice last year's 27 bushels.

Hard red spring wheat yields averaging 43 bushels are almost twice the 27 bushels from last year. Durum what at 30 bushels is 50 per cent better.

Running 34 bushels peas compared with 21 bushels while lentils at 1,174 pounds an acres are  one-third better than last season's 817 pounds.

Chickpeas, at 1,229 pounds an acre are almost half as much better than last harvest's 791.

Flax seed at 23 bushels is up by almost one-half from 15 while mustard at 1,102 pounds is about 150 per cent more than last year's
404 pounds.

Winter wheat at 43 bushels an acre is almost twice last year's 26 bushels.

At 75 bushels, barley is almost half better than 52 last year.

Oats is down by six bushels to 49 an acre.     

Fall rye has more than doubled to 44 bushels from 20.

Canary seed at 1,255 pounds an acre is up about 10 per cent. 

In the southwest, suffering its second year of dry weather, yields better than last year in canola, lentil,  chickpeas, barley, oats, winter wheat and fall rye.

Yields fall below 2021 in spring wheat, durum  canary seed, and flax.

Harvest was 42 per cent complete by Sept. 9, just above the five-year average of 42 per cent. Another 20 per cent was in the swathe or ready to cut.
