Resident Jeffrey McCaig — charged with allegedly causing the death of Kevin Hallock — has made his first appearance in Moose Jaw provincial court.

McCaig, 30, entered the prisoner’s box wearing a white jumpsuit during his appearance on Nov. 12. Legal Aid lawyer Suzanne Jeanson — acting as his defence lawyer — waived reading of McCaig’s charges and asked that his matters be adjourned to Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. This would give her enough time to receive and study the disclosure.

McCaig will appear at that time by video.

According to the Crown, McCaig is facing charges of unlawfully causing the death of a person by committing second-degree murder; breaching a recognizance by failing to keep the peace; breaching a recognizance by possessing and consuming alcohol; breach of a recognizance by possessing a weapon (knife); possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and carrying a weapon dangerous to the public.

Based on previous information, Moose Jaw police responded to a call around 10 p.m. on Nov. 10 on the 400 block of Stadacona Street East. Upon arrival, police say they found a man — Hallock — who had been stabbed. He was taken to the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police later took a suspect — McCaig — into custody in connection with the incident and charged him with second-degree murder.
