Taupert turns aside 21 shots, Mullen scores pair as Moose Jaw takes 3-0 win at Mosaic Place

Action from the AAA Warriors first exhibition game against the Swift Current Legionnaires.
The Moose Jaw Warriors couldn’t have asked for a better start to Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League season.

And while it might only be exhibition play, not allowing a goal over 120 minutes of action is as positive a result as one could hope for with the regular season a week away.

Jaxson Taupert turned aside 21 shots to earn the shut-out as the Warriors took a 3-0 victory over the Swift Current Legionnaires on Sunday afternoon, less than 24 hours after rolling to a 7-0 win in their season opener Saturday.

Moose Jaw Minor Hockey product Kirk Mullen scored twice for Moose Jaw, who out shot the Legionnaires 21-6 in the opening period and never looked back.

Max Wanner had the Warriors’ other goal, while Atley Calvert picked up three assists and was named the team’s game star.

The Warriors led 1-0 after the first and 3-0 after the second while firing 45 shots at Swift Current netminder Noah Martens.

Taupert’s shutout leaves two Warriors at the top of the goaltending standings after the single weekend of exhibition games, both with perfect 1.000 save percentages. Mullen and Calvert each have four points and are tied for fourth in league scoring.

The Warriors are back in action Sunday, Nov. 1 when they kick off the regular season against the Yorkton Maulers, with game time at 1:30 p.m.at Mosaic Place.

Moose Jaw will play a modified schedule against the six teams from southern Saskatchewan in the SMAAAHL due to the ongoing pandemic. That includes Swift Current, Regina, Notre Dame, Yorkton and the first-year Estevan Bears.

The Prince Albert Mintos, Tisdale Trojans, Battlefords Stars, Saskatoon Blazers, Saskatoon Contacts and first-year Warman Wildcats will play in the north.
