The Moose Jaw Warriors needed a win over the Saskatoon Blazers to maintain their hold on first place in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League on Thursday night, and that’s exactly what happened.

Playing their first league contest since reaching the Mac’s Midget AAA tournament final, the Warriors took a 3-1 lead out of the first period and never looked back on their way to a 5-2 victory in Saskatoon.

The win saw the Warriors improve to 22-8-1-0 and maintain their two-point lead over the Blazers and Saskatoon Contacts atop the SMAAAHL.

Moose Jaw was in little danger from the start, as Davis Fry, Atley Calvert and Evan Callaghan all scored in the game’s first 10 minutes to give the Warriors their commanding lead.

Ryan Conlon would get one back for Saskatoon before the period was out, but Calvert added a shorthanded marker 6:21 into the second and was followed by Matt Perkins with his first as a Warrior since officially joining the team on a full-time basis. Perkins played as an affiliated player with the Tribe at the Mac’s.

Hayden Wilm would get one back for the Blazers before the period was out, but that would be as close as they’d get.

Chase Coward got the start in goal for the Warriors and turned aside 23 shots. Western Hockey League Warriors prospect Brett Mirwald started for the Blazers and made 24 saves in two periods of work before giving way to Zane Winter, who closed out the contest with 10 saves in the third.

The Warriors are back in action this weekend as they host the Tisdale Trojans on Saturday and the Beardy’s Blackhawks for the final time on Sunday. Both games are at 1:30 p.m. at Mosaic Place.
