The Moose Jaw AAA Warriors goaltenders could get very comfortable very quickly if they had a chance to face the Swift Current Legionnaires every night.

The Warriors picked up their third shutout in as many meetings with the Legionnaires on Friday in Swift Current, as Kael DePape stopped all 24 shots he faced for his first clean sheet of the Sask Male AAA Hockey League regular season.

It was also DePape’s second shutout against Swift Current, after earning the win in Moose Jaw’s 7-0 victory to open the exhibition season on Oct. 24. One night later, Jaxson Taupert blanked the Legionnaires in a 3-0 win at Mosaic Place.

Kirk Mullen scored twice for the Warriors, who took a 2-0 lead out of the first period and led 5-0 through two while pouring 44 shots on Legionnaires goaltender Zane Winter, 22 in each of the first two frames.

Warriors rookie Tony Wilson enjoyed his best game so far with his new team, scoring once and adding two assists, while older brother and Victoria Royals prospect Wyatt Wilson picked up a pair of helpers to move into a tie for third in league scoring with three goals and four assists. Both players are natives of Swift Current.

Max Wanner added a goal and an assist, while Hayden Wilm and Atley Calvert had their other markers. Ethan Peters and Matt Perkins had two assists each.

Winter ended up facing no less than 56 shots in the Legionnaires goal.

The Warriors improved to 3-0 on the season and hold down first place in the SMAAAHL South and would be tied for first with Saskatoon Contacts in a normal campaign.

The two teams are back in action Sunday afternoon at Mosaic Place. The contest is sold out, having reached the 150 ticket limit due to COVID restrictions, but the game will be streamed on the Warriors Facebook page and you can follow the score on the SMAAAHL website.
