AAA Warriors pick up fourth-straight win as defence continues to shine

Moose Jaw takes 4-1 victory over Legionnaires in Swift Current

The Moose Jaw AAA Warriors appear to have figured something out when it comes to their overall team defence as of late.

The end result has led to an offensive nightmare for their Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League opponents as the Warriors have put together a four-game winning streak, allowing a goal or less in each of those contests.

The latest example came Tuesday night, as the Warriors held the Swift Current Legionnaires to only 16 shots on their way to a 4-1 victory in Swift Current.

The win saw the Warriors improve to 16-8-0-0 on the season, three points back of the third-place Notre Dame Hounds and one up on the Saskatoon Blazers, although Saskatoon has four games in hand.

In addition to their one goal allowed Tuesday, the Warriors have shut out Swift Current and Regina and held Prince Albert to a single goal during their win streak.

Things were close in the early going between the Warriors and Legionnaires, with Grady Hoffman scored the lone first-period marker to give Moose Jaw a 1-0 lead.

Connor Miller extended the edge to 2-0 in the second as the Warriors poured on the pressure, outshooting Swift Current 20-6 in the frame. They’d still only hold a one-goal lead, though, as Phoenix Larose got one back for the Legionnaires midway through the period.

There things stood until 2:28 remained in the game when Daxin Peterson scored an insurance marker, and Hoffman closed out scoring with an empty netter with 42 seconds to play.

Ryan Bain made 16 saves to earn the win, while Swift Current’s Liam Ernst faced 43 shots.

The Warriors did receive some bad news recently, as their recent winning ways came just a bit too late to earn a spot in the prestigious Mac’s AAA World Invitational Hockey Tournament. The cut-off date was in late November and saw the league’s top four teams at that time -- the Regina Pat Canadians, Warman Wildcats, Saskatoon Blazers and Prince Albert Mintos -- earn spots in the 30-team tournament.

The Warriors have since leapfrogged the Blazers and Mintos in the standings.

Moose Jaw is back in action this Saturday when they travel to Saskatoon to face the Blazers.
