AAA Warriors lose tough one at home to Notre Dame

Hounds score five second-period goals on way to 11-2 win at Mosaic Place

It was just one of those nights for the Moose Jaw AAA Warriors.

The Notre Dame Hounds scored five goals in the second period and controlled play throughout on their way to an 11-4 victory in Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League action on Thursday at Mosaic Place.

Things weren’t all that bad in the early going, as Owen Thomas and Van Eger scored for Notre Dame in the first period as the Hounds took a 2-0 lead.

Things changed quickly after the break, though.

Thomas, Remi Lapalme and Ty Beacon scored in the first nine minutes of the second before Ben Aucoin added a pair of goals just over two minutes apart -- including a shorthanded marker with 4:25 left in the frame -- to give Notre Dame a 7-0 lead through two.

Lapalme added his second of the game 1:24 into the third, but three minutes later Moose Jaw’s Daxin Peterson snapped Hounds netminder Joey Rocha’s shutout with his 15th goal of the season.

Cole Wirun, Antoine Lavigne and Thomas added three more Notre Dame goals in a span of 2:15 midway through the period to extend their lead to 11-1.

The Warriors’ Rowan Calvert then closed out scoring with a power play marker with 6:42 to play.

Ethan Fechter got the start and made 11 saves in 24:11 before giving way to Ryan Bain, who had 20 saves the rest of the way.

Rocha had a 33-save showing for Notre Dame.

The Warriors fell to 23-15-0-1 with the loss and are now sixth in the 12-team league, a point back of the Saskatoon Contacts and three up on the Prince Albert Mintos.

Notre Dame improved to 29-8-0-1 and are tied for first with the Warman Wildcats.

Sure enough, that’s exactly who the Warriors face on Sunday, with Warman making the trip south. The game is being played in Caronport at the Barkman Arena, as Mosaic Place is hosting a major cheerleading competition. Game time is 4 p.m.
