AAA Warriors get back on track with win over Swift Current

Three goals in third period give Tribe 4-2 victory over Legionnaires
First place might be all but out of their grasp, but the Moose Jaw Warriors are still looking to finish the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League campaign in solid fashion.

The Warriors scored three third-period goals to take a 4-2 victory over the Swift Current Legionnaires in league action in Swift Current on Friday, closing to within four points of the first place Regina Pat Canadians. But with only two games remaining in the regular season and the Pat Cs holding the tiebreaker, second place appears to be the Warriors fate.

Kirk Mullen got the Warriors on the board with a power play goal 2:51 into the game, and that edge would hold until the Legionnaires’ Riley Dekowny tied the game with 3:35 left in the second.

Quinn Strang would give Swift Current a 2-1 lead only 19 seconds into the third, and with the Warriors’ recent third-period struggles, that could have been a bad sign.

But when things did turn the Warriors’ way, they turned quickly.

Caelan Fitzpatrick scored with 3:30 remaining in the game and followed with his second of the contest only 52 seconds later to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead. Atley Calvert added an empty netter with 40 seconds remaining after drawing assists on the tying and winning goals.

Chase Coward finished with 15 saves to earn the win, while Jacob Herman stopped 57 shots.

The Warriors now hold a 30-11-1-0 record three points up on the Saskatoon Blazers, who have three games in hand.
