A poem in remembrance of Dieppe

It is the 80th Anniversary of the tragedy of Dieppe.

Landing craft en route to Dieppe, France, during Operation Jubilee, 19 August 1942.

“It is the 80th Anniversary of the tragedy of Dieppe. What was learned at Dieppe was a great help to the success of D-Day a few years later. From the tragedy of Dieppe came the success of the Normandy Invasion, which heralded the end of Hitler.

“Many of the younger Canadians do not know the tragedy of Dieppe, so this poem is a graphic reminder of the heavy human cost of the price of our freedom today.” – Garth Paul Ukrainetz

Should have known from the start
The name spelled it out
Dying people everywhere
5,000 Canadian soldiers landed
3,400 casualties
On the beaches of Dieppe
August 19, 1942
Lest we forget
