Five for Friday: June in Moose Jaw

A look at five local events coming up in the month of June

June begins on Saturday. As we head towards the official start of summer, this week we are highlighting five local events to look out for this month.

South of the Bridge Day

It is time once again for the annual South Hill celebration. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot on Fourth Ave. SW and Lillooet. There will be a scavenger hunt for all ages. Prizes will be awarded. You can learn more about South Hill while taking a heritage trolley tour. The cost for the tour is by donation. There will also be hot dogs for sale as well as music and fun activities. Don’t miss out!

Annual Powwow

Once again, the Wakamow Aboriginal Community Association will host its annual powwow on June 14 and 15. This year, the powwow will be held in Tatawaw Park, formerly known as the Wild Animal Park. This is the site of the city’s original powwow, so it will be a great opportunity to honour Moose Jaw’s heritage. The event starts on Friday, June 14 with a pipe ceremony and feast.

The powwow itself will be held on Saturday the 15th. A new Tatawaw Park sign will be unveiled as part of the weekend at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The grand entry for the powwow will be at 12 and 6 p.m. There is no charge to attend and all are welcome.

Of course, National Indigenous Peoples Day will also be held on Friday, June 21, coinciding with the summer solstice. Celebrate the longest day of the year and Indigenous culture. There will be a special concert in Tatawaw Park this year, beginning at 8 p.m.

Cassidy’s Lemonade Stand

Enjoy a refreshing glass of lemonade while supporting a great cause. Cassidy’s Lemonade Stand is set to return for another year. Be sure to stop by on Friday, June 21 at École Palliser Heights School from 1 to 6 p.m. and again on Saturday, June 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each glass of lemonade costs $2. All proceeds will support cystic fibrosis advocacy and research. Over the past six-plus years, the event has raised over $75,000.

Moose Jaw Hometown Fair and Parade

Of course, the month of June always includes the ever-popular Hometown Fair. Once again, the fair will get started with the traditional parade, which will be held Thursday, June 20, beginning at 7 p.m. This year’s theme is “Candy Land.” You can expect to see lots of colourful floats and community groups walking along Main Street. Want to get involved? Parade entry forms are available on the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company’s webpage. You must apply by June 7.

The Hometown Fair itself will be held June 21-23. Whether you enjoy the food, the midway, or the entertainment, there will be something for everyone. Keep checking the Exhibition Company’s Facebook page for more information on this year’s lineup.

Tickets are $45 for one day (gate and rides) or $85 for all three days. Pre-sale gate and ride tickets are available now at South Hill Fine Foods or the Moose Jaw Exhibition office. Get your tickets today and don’t miss out!

Claybank Brick Plant Heritage Day

End the month with a roadtrip out to the Claybank Brick Plant for its annual Heritage Day on Sunday, June 30. Gates will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can take self-guided tours to learn how bricks were made and enjoy hands-on and static demonstrations. There will also be free hayrides to the Massold Clay Canyons, children's activities, musical entertainment, a lunch concession with homemade bakery items, and more! The entrance fee is $10 per person or $25 per family.

Enjoy the month of June!
