Five for Friday: Bad Halloween costume ideas

Halloween is next Thursday. As always, there will be plenty of popular costumes popping up on doorsteps and at parties over the next week. For kids, you can expect lots of video game characters and superheroes. Adults will probably gravitate towards characters from films like Joker or Pennywise from It Chapter Two.

Of course, not every costume is a hit. This week, we look at five unpopular costume ideas.

Kawhi Leonard — in a Clippers Jersey

Much of the country got caught up in the Toronto Raptors’ incredible playoff run this summer. At the centre of the team’s success was Kawhi Leonard, who was named playoff MVP. After much deliberation and silliness, however, Kawhi opted to sign as a free agent with the Los Angeles Clippers. While Raptors fans will be eternally grateful of Kawhi’s contributions, no one wants to be reminded that the team’s superstar is gone. There is no need to rub salt in the wound. Perhaps go with Kyle Lowry or Fred VanVleet, or maybe even switch sports and opt for Riders QB Cody Fajardo?

Carbon Tax Bill

The carbon tax has been a point of contention in Saskatchewan. While there may be some who aren’t opposed, it is clearly not the popular opinion around these parts. Dressing up as a SaskEnergy bill with a carbon tax charge will likely serve as an unhappy reminder for many as to where their hard-earned money is going. Considering Justin Trudeau was re-elected earlier this week, the pain may be even greater. Don’t be surprised if a few of the party guests get together to challenge your presence at the party.

First Avenue’s Centre Turning Lane

It seems like an easy, affordable, and topical costume — grab a long piece of cardboard and decorate it to look like a piece of road with yellow lines and tuning arrows. Unfortunately, this is not a good idea.

People at the party won’t know how to interact with you. Some will question why you were even invited in the first place and soon Facebook will be filled with people complaining about your very existence. Others will say you have ruined the flow of traffic at the party. Unsure of how to interact with you properly, someone will cause an accident.

Storelgen

Last winter, Moose Jaw learned that another moose statue in Norway had stolen the title of “World’s Tallest Moose” away from us. This injustice could not go unanswered. After a fundraising effort and much brouhaha, Mac eventually received new antlers that helped re-take his rightful place atop the world. With that bit of ugliness now behind us, there is no need to revisit the incident. Besides, many, including comedian Stephen Colbert, thought that Norway’s Storelgen statue was a sleeker, more attractive moose.

Also, don’t be the guy who puts on a generic moose costume and adds a fake bust to go as “Mac’s new rack.” That’s just tacky.

Justin Trudeau

It is no secret that Justin Trudeau remains an unpopular guy in Western Canada — the entire province voted Conservative in this past week’s federal election. Thus, if you dress up as the PM, you risk name calling or perhaps worse. You can expect someone to suggest the rest of the party separate and go have their own fun elsewhere. Basically, it will be a mess.

Complicating matters is the temptation to go with the costume-within-a-costume concept, opting to go as Justin Trudeau dressed in one his favourite outfits. This is definitely a bad idea. Avoid going as Justin Trudeau travelling in India and, it goes without saying, dressing as Justin at an Arabian Nights party will likely be problematic.

Regardless, it is never a good idea to dress as the least popular guy in the room. Maybe stick with Andrew Scheer instead.

Avoid these costumes, unless you want to risk getting thrown out of the party. But whatever you choose to wear, be sure to have a safe and fun Halloween!
