During the Saskatchewan Roughriders game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 2, second-year American receiver Dohnte Meyers made an acrobatic 23-yard catch late in the game to help the Green and White win 28-23.
"I understood it was the fourth quarter, so a play needed to be made, some momentum needs to be sparked and I'm glad that coach called up a play that I was part of. Trevor [Harris] trusted me enough to make a play and my team relied on me enough to be in that position to come down with it," Meyers detailed to voice of the Riders Dave Thomas.
"Receivers, we got to go get it. We call ourselves playmakers, that's what we break it down on, so that's what we go do."
His quarterback believes Meyers is an "incredible athlete."
"He's very twitchy, gets up to top speed very fast, a tough dude and can make tough catches. He's somebody that we're going to be relying on this year," Harris said.
"Him making plays like that will become normal and you guys will see it a lot. He's done it a lot in training camp. He's able to track balls really well. When I watched it back on film, for him to drag the toe the way he did was really, really cool. I'm glad he got his flowers and got an Instagram post from the CFL on it."
Meyers hauled in five balls for 40 yards against the Ticats at Hamilton Stadium as Saskatchewan improved to 2-0.
"I feel like we rose to the occasion. I feel like we closed in the fourth quarter and that was our job, "Meyers said. "I wouldn't say we left a lot of those things out there, it's always mistakes that you can correct; I've been watching the film."
The 24-year-old Meyers emerged as a threat with the Riders in his rookie season. Last year, the five-foot-10, 190-pound pass catcher recorded 24 receptions for 349 yards and one touchdown in four games then suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the Labour Day Classic.
"I feel like I'm more comfortable. Practices are very competitive. We have some all-stars on our defence, so being able to see that look in practice... I feel like I'm more experienced, I'm more comfortable, that comes with more reps."
According to Meyers, every Green and White receiver has the ability to play multiple positions and the group takes pride in their versatility.
"Our job is to know the offence, everybody regardless of position because I'm not the first one to do it," Meyers said. "There are other players such as Mitchell [Picton], Dhel [Duncan-Busby], Samuel [Emilus], they all know other positions, KeeSean [Johnson]. Depending on the week, whatever the assignment is, whether it's inside or out, we get it done."
Meyers and the Riders travel to Toronto on Friday to take on the Argos. Catch the pre-game show with Teagan Witko, Justin Dunk and Wes Cates at 2:30 p.m. while Dave Thomas and Luc Mullinder will have the call at 5:30 p.m. You can hear everything on the 620 CKRM Co-operators Rider Broadcast Network.
