Riders’ QB Trevor Harris might be playing best football in his CFL career at 39 years old

Saskatchewan Roughriders' quarterback Trevor Harris is humble about his start to this year’s CFL season. He's on pace to do better statistically than he did with the Ottawa Redblacks in 2018 when he had a single-season career-high 5,116 passing yards.

"I'd probably lean to the experts out there that have been telling me that or been saying that in the media. I try and do the best I can, one play at a time, to be completely transparent. I don't want to let the guys down, I think that's one of the big things that has always driven me -- my teammates -- and trying to get better for them every year. But I remember saying at the end of last year, I thought my best football was ahead of me, so I hope it's true," Harris said.

"I hope it continues to be true and I think it is. To be honest, I think we've got another level and we've got to keep demanding more out of each other. For us to play at a high level, there have to be people around you. That's one thing about football: it's going to challenge you mentally, emotionally, physically and ask you to be a part of something bigger than yourself. If you're having success, it's bigger than you. The fact that I'm seen as having a successful year so far, it's bigger than me. It's staff, players and everybody together."

Through five games with the Redblacks in 2018, Harris had a 3-2 win-loss record with 1,278 passing yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. Through the 39-year-old's first five starts with the Green and White in 2025, he has a 4-1 win-loss record with 1,626 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions. Head coach Corey Mace is proud of Harris, but he sees one focus for his team.

"As long as he's moving the offence efficiently, which is important to him, it's important to us, that's all we care about, and he's doing that," Mace said. "Whether he's the best or not, certainly those things are talked about at the end of the season. He's got a long road ahead, but certainly knowing Trevor and what we do here, he's trying to be the best quarterback."

The Edmonton Elks have decided to start former Saskatchewan quarterback Cody Fajardo for Friday's game against the Green and White. It's his first start in Regina since leaving the franchise following the 2022 season with the Riders.

"He's played here a long time, was a beloved player here, the fans love him. When he went over to Montreal and I came here, we talked about playing against one another and him coming back to Mosaic. I never really thought it would be me being here and him in Edmonton and how it's happened, but here we are. People get to boo Cody, hopefully on field, but hopefully they can at least let him know how much they appreciate what he did for the city, town and organization as a tremendous quarterback here during his time," Harris said.

"I hope it's not a sweet homecoming for him. Hopefully, we can hand him an 'L' but it's going to be a difficult task because we know he's a great quarterback. They're a great team, they're a hungry team, they're a well-coached team and we know they're going to come out fighting and scrapping, but so are we."

The tilt between the Riders and the Elks goes Friday at Mosaic Stadium. Teagan Witko, Justin Dunk and Wes Cates bring to you the pre-game show at 4 p.m. while Dave Thomas and Luc Mullinder have the game call at 7 p.m. You can hear everything on the 620 CKRM Co-operators Rider Broadcast Network.
