While the number of cases continue to increase daily in Saskatchewan, efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 and the coronavirus that causes it appear to paying dividends only a few weeks after being put in place.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority announced on Saturday morning that 11 new cases had been found in the province on Friday, including three in the southern area – which covers Moose Jaw, Swift Current and Weyburn.

What makes that number of case increases interesting compared to other areas hit by the virus is how it's become readily apparent social distancing efforts and the quick response by the province in mitigating the damage has paid off.

While other provinces saw their number of cases rapidly balloon to over 1,000 only days after the first 100, Saskatchewan has seen small increases in the high single digits to low teens ever since hitting a height of 30 cases in a single day on Mar. 27.

Overall, the total number of cases in the province is now 231, with almost half of those in the Saskatoon and Humboldt region.

Other data from Friday:

  • Seven (7) of the cases are individuals in the zero to 19-year-old category; all others are adults, with 54% of the cases are males and 46% are females

  • 106 of cases are travel-related, 65 are either contacts or linked to a mass gathering event, 13 have no known exposures and 47 are under investigation by local public health

  • A total of four (4) individuals are hospitalized; including three (3) inpatient hospitalizations and one (1) ICU hospitalization

  • Three (3) Saskatchewan residents with COVID-19 have died

  • A total of fifty-five (55) individuals have recovered

  • To date, 12,670 COVID-19 tests have been performed in Saskatchewan

In the Moose Jaw region, the 13 cases have seen two fully recovered and none currently in hospital. A total of 1,243 patients currently have had tests ordered and a total of 1,287 tests have been performed. Data for Moose Jaw city specifically wasn't available.
